Global Collaboration Project By: Kendra Ellsworth With:Molly Wilson & Alleana Bower Subject: World Culture/Literacy Grade: Elementary
Project Overview
Objective: The goal of this project is for students to gain a better understanding of how one culture differs from another because we will be comparing their daily lives to another foreign students life. Students will also gain a better understanding of the use of technology for communication because they will be video chatting and using skype to communicate.
Culminating Project: First students will answer questions based off of their daily life which will later be used in their video. As well as, find a photo that they think best represents their daily life in their country. The teachers will compile the videos and photos and upload them onto drop box. After watching the videos and viewing the photos and skyping each other, students will use that information to write a reflection that compares similarities and differences between the countries and the student’s daily lives.

WA State Tech Standards
Standard 1: Empowered Learner - Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
1.b. With guidance from an educator, students learn about various technologies that can be used to connect to others or make their learning environments personal and select resources from those available to enhance their learning.
Standard 7: Global Collaborator - Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.
7.a. With guidance from an educator, students use technology tools to work with friends and with people outside their neighborhood, city and beyond.
7.b. With guidance from an educator, students use technology to communicate with others and to look at problems from different perspectives.
7.c. With guidance from an educator, students take on different team roles and use age-appropriate technologies to complete projects.
7.d. With guidance from an educator, students use age-appropriate technologies to work together to understand problems and suggest solutions.
Justification
1.b.: This standard fits with our lesson plan because students will be gain experience using dropbox and video chat, which will help them connect to students in Australia. Not only are student making connects to other students globally, but they are learning a variety of ways technology can be used as a form for communication. 7a: Students will use videos and dropbox to broaden their knowledge on collaborating country. Student will use information given from students in the collaborating country to help them gain information on what life if like in their country on a typical day. 7.b: Students will view videos of students responses to 6 questions from collaborating country in order to compare their cultures. Students will also share photos via dropbox in order to compare their cultures visually. 7.c.: Students will individually video their responses to the questions with teachers guidance and help. They will also upload a photo to the collaborative dropbox in order for both classrooms to have access to all photos. Both videos and photos allow all students gain perspective on the collaborating countries daily life. Gathering this information will help students make connections with students during their final skype call. 7.d.: Students use information from their own classroom and the Australian classroom to understand what differences and similarities the two share. The information is gathered via videos and photos. Comparing their lives to another cultures will help them gain knowledge of another country.
Project Plan
Background information: Students in my first grade classroom in Washington State, will be creating videos and picking out a photo that represents their daily life during our world culture/ Literacy time. They will be sharing this with another first grade classroom from Sydney, Australia. They will use this information to compare each others lives and then get to video chat the classroom that participated in this project.
Outline of project: Students will be creating a video based off six questions the teachers have provided. They will take these questions home for homework and come back with the answers completed. That day, the teacher and parent helper will take videos of each student. After the video is completed, the teachers will put together all the videos and upload onto Dropbox. The students will also bring in any appropriate photo that represents them. The teacher will scan the photos and upload them onto Dropbox as well. After each class has finished and uploaded their part of the project. The teachers will set up a time to have each class Skype each other. Doing this will help the students connect to the project and ask any other questions they would have. After all of this is completed, students will write a reflection that shows the similarities and differences between cultures. Culminating Joint Project: After the class has received the video responses and photos from the students in Australia, the teacher will then combine all of the students videos from both classes to create one big video. This video will consist of each students video, and will be played in front of the whole class. This will be a way for the students to see different perspectives of how other students from other countries live their everyday lives. Based off this video, students will then be able to take this information and create a reflection, that compares and contrasts the different lifestyles of each student.
